If you’re anything like me and regularly have to shift massive sheets of MDF and plywood you’ll know what a pain in the backside they can be. In the UK the standard sheet size is 2440 x 1220mm (8′ x 4′) and for a sheet of 18mm (3/4″) MDF that weighs in at around 40kg.

So, my tip for you is to make a little dolly using 4 castors in a small block of wood. The reason for using 4 castors is so that it doesn’t fall over when you’re trying to position a board in it. I tried it with 3 castors and it just wasn’t stable enough. I’m using 50mm rubber wheels for this – if you want it to handle bumps and uneven ground better use bigger wheels. If you want it to be closer to the ground so you don’t have to lift the board as high, use smaller wheels. 50mm was a good compromise for me.
Here’s something I didn’t mention in the video but the block of wood I used is actually the exact size of a cat flap. Why? Because when I was out building a bookcase for a customer they asked me to fit a catflap while I was there. I used 2 x 18mm pieces of MDF to act as guides / supports – these are held on with a couple of metal angle brackets. The brackets are at a deliberate angle to create a ‘V shape’ for the wood sheets to fit in to. Works really well and saves your back when it comes to moving around those enormous sheets of wood!
